Too many skunks in Vernon Hills, Lake County, Illinois, near Chicago

 

Residents around Augusta Park and Aspen Backyard Park in Vernon, Lake County, Illinois, have been complaining about the high numbers of skunks in the area.  A police officer even witnessed a skunk charging a jogger in one of the parks.  Skunks are the most common carriers of rabies in Illinois, so officials have been worried about the high concentration of the animals in an area so close to neighborhoods and playgrounds.  In a four week period, 29 skunks were captured, as well as 7 raccoons and six opossums.
